How a $6K Law School Loan Almost Killed My Marriage

On July 16th, 2014, I gave birth to my baby girl. That was one of the happiest days of my life. I knew it was going to be a challenging journey for me, but it was a completely different story for my husband, who went to law school at the age of 22, and was married to me just one month before I had my baby.

My husband’s dream was to be a lawyer. He worked hard for it. However, just one month after giving birth to our baby girl, he was called to work due to an urgent need of his new job. He left our child in the care of her grandmother and drove for over 500 miles to go to a place where his job was waiting.

It was a day that changed my whole life.

As soon as my husband left, the first thing I did was to take care of our daughter, and she needed a lot of attention. But I felt guilty for leaving her behind because I wasn’t able to breastfeed her, and she needed to be fed. The best thing to do for our daughter would be to hire a nanny. We needed someone who would stay with her 24/7 for the rest of her childhood.

It was hard to find a good person.

We were in a very tight financial situation. So, I decided to look for a way to make the situation better for us. One day, my mom told me that she saw an advertisement for a job opening in a nearby city. There was a need for someone who can take care of children. As soon as I heard that, I immediately called the number and started the interview process.

The Interview

I didn’t know anything about the company, but they had great reviews, and I trusted them. I took my time to prepare myself for the interview, and the first thing that came to my mind was: “I have been a mother for almost 2 months, and now I have to start all over again?” But I had no option.

In the first interview, I was asked what my current salary was. When I replied with the lowest salary that I had ever made, the interviewer told me that they would not consider my application. He said that they hired only those candidates who had a higher salary.

I kept waiting and thinking what to do. It was the first time in my life that I failed to get a job.

But my mom was my biggest source of support. She encouraged me to continue with the interview process, and that’s when I realized that I wasn’t alone. Many women were struggling to find a job, and I didn’t want to be one of them.

After my second interview, I received an email telling me that the company would provide me with a job, but it was a night shift. I felt relieved because I knew that I would be able to breastfeed my daughter in a better manner.

My husband is a lawyer, so he always tries to save money, but I thought why not. It is going to be good for us, so I started to shop for everything and got a $6k loan.

I knew it was wrong to spend money on stuffs like this and that too in the initial days. But, I just couldn’t stop myself. I was like a kid in a candy store, and I wanted to have every single item in my store.

I didn’t even consider the financial aspect, because I wanted to try it once. I wanted to see what the feeling is when you have something that your other half wants.

It was amazing! When I opened my door and saw the bags in front of me, I could not control myself. I started to open the bags and I saw the items which I had planned to give him for our anniversary. I felt that it was a great gift and it was enough for us both.

We both loved the gift so much, and now I have never regretted. I was planning to buy him a gift but my plans were changed. The moment I opened the door, I felt like a kid again. It felt like I have been given back the love which I was missing in my li
